Metaphor

MET-uh-for

 

A trope, or type of non-literal language, that pretends one thing is something comparable to it. Usually better in formal or poetic speech, the metaphor can sound fancy in day to day conversation. P.G. Wodehouse’s character Bertie Wooster was beleaguered by a young woman who liked to refer to stars as “God’s daisy chain.” When you’re on a date, better let stars be stars.

Editors often dispense an old piece of advice: “Murder your babies.” After you give birth to your lovely thoughts, you must kill some of them.  Word Hero
