In the pre-TV era when people played parlor games, many activities centered around competitive wit. I'm still a big believer in dinnertime parlor games, especially for families with children. A little wit around the table does more for a kid's education (and, arguably, her chance of getting high college board scores) than an eon of expensive tutoring.
A favorite game of mine: Venereal Names. Take a group and name it wittily after a characteristic or behavior. Start with animals (a reluctance of cats, a redundancy of parrots) and work your way up the food chain.
