Exercise Your Figures > Exercise 7: Analogous Puns

Word Hero Chapter One

On page 6, I use analogies to explain rhetorical figures. But my analogs are puns as well, aren't they? The figure of a monument and a woman's figure relate to figures of speech. Try to name other kinds of figures--in mathematics, for example--that help illustrate the rhetorical kind.

I'm bit confused about what's being asked here. Nonetheless, here's one attempt:

Figures are to text what Celebrities(well known figures) are to common folks.

Am I right?

A good figure of speech helps to connect the dots between truth and aspiration; it can triangulate the location of meaning from the legs of wit and wisdom; it can circle the wagons of logic against marauding and predacious ignorance; it squares reason with emotion to form art; it pushes square ideas into new forms; the right figure can transform a rectangular notion into a polyhedron adding depth and many facets to explore; it can reduce chaos to a simple circle of understanding; it can send ideas spiraling toward enlightenment or into oblivion; the right figure can launch the rocket of inspiration into orbit where it can circle until ready to re-enter and alter the atmosphere.
